Professionalism through the decades

  • Virtue-based → Behavior-based → Identity formation
  • Miller's Pyramid: Knows → Knows how → Shows how → Does (Action) → Is (Identity)
  • Role modeling, Socialization in communities of practice, Reflection and reflective capacity

Cultivating PIF

  • Role modeling → exemplars
    • Purposefully select exemplars
  • Reflection → study
    • Explore the motivation of exemplars
    • Call on/create experience to internalize
  • Socialization of practice
  • Clarify the goal
    • Purposeful creation of character, inspired by exemplars, with deep understanding and internalizing of motivation, as a reliable guide to authentic action

Culture regarding error

Technical error is ok. Judgment error is ok. Normative error is not ok. Drawn from observations made by sociologist Charles Bosk's (University of Chicago Press) on surgeon culture.

Method Acting

  • Incredible level of detail of study
  • Must experience real cup of coffee before being able to imagine it
  • Context is important
